Navigating the Intersection: Autism, OCD, and Collaborative ERP
When you are neurodivergent, the world often feels like it’s dialed up to a "10." For those living at the intersection of Autism and OCD, that intensity can feel overwhelming. You might find yourself stuck in loops of intrusive thoughts while also managing sensory sensitivities and a deep need for predictability.
In my Kelowna practice, I believe therapy shouldn't be about "fixing" your brain—it’s about helping you navigate the world more authentically while reducing the distress that OCD causes.
Understanding the Overlap
Autism and OCD often go hand-in-hand, but they require a nuanced approach. While some repetitive behaviors are a helpful part of being autistic (like "stimming" to regulate your system), OCD compulsions are driven by fear and anxiety.
The goal of our work together is to distinguish between what helps you feel safe and what is an OCD "trap" that is keeping you stuck.
A Collaborative Approach to ERP
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is the gold standard for OCD, but when we apply it through a neurodivergent-affirming lens, it looks a little different. We don't use a "tough it out" approach. Instead, we work collaboratively:
Respecting Sensory Needs: We ensure that "exposures" don't trigger sensory meltdowns. Your safety and comfort are the priority.
Tangible Strategies: We use clear, concrete tools to identify intrusive thoughts and practice "leaning into" uncertainty at a pace that feels manageable.
Building Agency: You are the expert on your experience. We work together to decide which challenges to tackle first, ensuring you always feel in control of the process.
Support for Your Next Chapter
I integrate ERP with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and EMDR to provide a well-rounded, empathetic space for adults, teens, and children. Whether we are processing trauma or building practical strategies for OCD, my focus is on offering a supportive space where you are accepted exactly as you are.
