Understanding the Intersection: Autism and Eating Disorders

For many neurodivergent individuals, the relationship with food is rarely "just about food." When you are autistic, your sensory experience of the world is unique, and this often extends to the dinner table. If you are struggling with an eating disorder alongside autism, it can feel like you’re fighting a battle that others don't quite understand.

In my Kelowna practice, I work with adults, teens, and children to navigate this complex intersection with empathy and specialized, tangible strategies.

Why the Connection?

The overlap between autism and disordered eating—specifically conditions like ARFID (Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) or anorexia—is often rooted in how your brain processes the environment:

  • Sensory Processing: Textures, smells, or even the sound of eating can be overwhelming, leading to a very restricted range of "safe" foods.

  • Need for Predictability: When the world feels chaotic, controlling food intake or following rigid routines can provide a temporary sense of safety and control.

  • Interoception: Many autistic people struggle to feel internal cues like hunger or fullness, making traditional intuitive eating models feel frustrating or impossible.

A Neuro-Affirming Approach to Recovery

We don't use a "one-size-fits-all" recovery plan. Instead, we collaborate to build a life that feels authentic to you. My approach integrates several modalities tailored to your needs:

  • CBT & ACT: We work on the thoughts and values behind the eating patterns, helping you move toward a life that feels more meaningful and less restricted.

  • Safety First: My goal is to offer a safe, supportive space where you are accepted just as you are. We prioritize sensory comfort and emotional safety as the foundation for any change.

  • Tangible Strategies: We focus on practical ways to ensure you are nourished while respecting your sensory boundaries.
