Helping Your Child Thrive: Creative and Practical Tools for Kids and Youth in Kelowna
As parents, we want nothing more than to see our children happy, confident, and thriving. But growing up today isn't easy. From navigating big school transitions and social pressures to managing deeper struggles with anxiety, ADHD, or OCD, our kids carry a lot on their shoulders.
If you’ve noticed your child or teen struggling to cope, you might be wondering how to best support them. Finding the right child and youth counselling can make all the difference.
Based right here in the Okanagan, my goal is to provide safe, compassionate counselling for kids in Kelowna—giving them a space where they feel truly heard, understood, and supported.
Meeting Kids Where They Are: Expressive Art
Sometimes, sitting on a couch and talking about big feelings is just too intimidating for a child or teenager. In fact, many kids don't even have the words to describe what they are feeling inside.
That is why I love incorporating expressive art and creative tools into my practice.
By using art supplies, drawing, and play, therapy becomes hands-on and approachable. Creating art allows kids and youth to:
Express complex emotions without the pressure of finding the "perfect" words.
Process difficult experiences in a gentle, non-threatening way.
Build a sense of safety and trust in the counselling room.
Whether we are sketching out what anxiety looks like or using creative tools to explore a problem, art breaks down barriers and lets kids just be themselves.
Practical Strategies for the Real World: CBT for Youth and Kids
While creativity opens the door, we also want to give your child practical, real-world tools they can use when life feels overwhelming. That’s where Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) comes in.
CBT is a highly effective, evidence-based approach that helps kids and teens understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and actions. When working with youth, I use CBT to help them:
Catch and challenge "bully thoughts" or negative thinking patterns.
Learn concrete mindfulness and breathing strategies to calm their nervous system.
Break down massive, scary problems into small, manageable steps.
By blending the creative freedom of expressive art with the practical structure of CBT, your child gets the best of both worlds: a place to vent and heal, and a toolkit to handle life's ups and downs.
Support That Fits Your Family's Busy Life
I know that life in Kelowna is busy between school, sports, and family commitments. To make getting support as stress-free as possible, I offer flexible scheduling, including weekend and evening appointments, so you don't have to worry about pulling your child out of class.
You don’t have to navigate these challenges alone. If you are looking for a supportive, neuro-affirming space for your child or teen to grow, let’s connect.
