What should I look for in a therapist for neurodiverse individuals?

Finding a therapist is already tough. But when you have an ADHD brain, or you’re dealing with the intense, exhausting waves of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD), it can feel downright overwhelming. Traditional, rigid "talk therapy" often doesn't work for us. In fact, it can sometimes just feel like another place where you're expected to mask and people-please.

If you’re looking for a counsellor who actually gets how a neurodivergent mind works, here are a few things I always recommend keeping an eye out for:

  • An affirming vibe, not a "fixing" vibe: You don't need a therapist who treats your brain like a broken machine that needs to be cured. Look for a Registered Clinical Counsellor who celebrates how your mind works, helps you understand your wiring, and creates a space where you can finally unmask.

  • Flexibility and creativity: Sitting completely still on a couch for 50 minutes talking about your childhood can feel stagnant for an active mind. Look for someone who integrates creative tools, somatic work, or even outdoor walk-and-talk sessions. You want a somatic and trauma-informed lens that heals the deep-seated shame of living in a world built for neurotypical people.

  • Practical, real-world tools: Processing your emotions is huge, but you also need strategies for Monday morning. The right therapist will help you navigate executive dysfunction and emotional storms using tailored frameworks—like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)—so you leave with actual, tangible steps.

Ultimately, the most important piece of the puzzle is a genuine human connection where you feel entirely safe to be your messy, creative, authentic self.

If you are looking for neurodivergent-affirming therapy here in Kelowna (or online anywhere in BC), let's chat. You don't have to navigate the overwhelm alone.
